Bank of America: Bad, Bad, Bad

So, yeah, this is going to be a little ranty; feel free to skip it if you like Bank of America, or just don’t feel like hearing a windy blowhard spouting bile.

I’m not going into the many reasons I decided to close out my Bank of America account, just the representative experience of actually doing it.

So I rolled in, got to a teller, and told her I wanted to close my account. She directed me to the back of the bank, since tellers can’t close accounts.

Okay, fine. I’m not going to get into asking why I can’t just close my account through their horrible, horrible website, but fine.

Right after I’d emptied the account in preparation for closing it, they hit me the very next day with a $10 “below acceptable account balance” fee. And, of couse, a $25 overdraft fee, since there was a zero balance.

Okay, fine. I’m leaving, it’s your last chance to nickel-and-dime me, I understand.

The account-closing lady offered to take the fee off, but their fee-refunding computer system was down. And there were people she could call to fix it, but they weren’t going to be in until Monday. I could come in Monday, and “maybe” she could get the fee taken off. No thanks, I’ve been on that merry-go-round. (“Maybe we could take off the balance charge, but you’ll need to come in next Wednesday to take off the overdraft.” “Maybe we could take $5 dollars off the overdraft, but you’ll need to call our service in Turbekistan, which only operates every other full moon.” “Oops, this other fee got put on your account. Maybe you could…”) Bleh. NO THANKS. I’ll just take my lumps and pay the stupid $35 “Get Out of Our Bank” fee.

So she redirects me back to the tellers, since she can’t deal with money.

Okay, fine, FINE. I get back in line.

Once I get hold of another teller, I hand her my credit card. She starts talking about a “cash advance” and whoa! I stomp the brakes, because my CC charges painfully punitive cash advance fees. Apparently, Holy Cow, THEY ARE NOT ABLE TO RUN A CREDIT CARD AT BANK OF AMERICA.

Seriously?

So I offer her a debit card. She gets that look, like “Oh no this guy is about to flip out.” Apparently, I have to go to the ATM machine outside to withdraw cash to deposit, since THEY CAN’T DO DEBIT CARDS EITHER. Although, she says, some customers have reported having “trouble” with the ATM machine.

No kidding. Trouble, you say? Shock!

Okay, fine. Hit me with the cash advance fee, so I can finally close this stupid account and LEAVE. Sure, sure.

She proceeds to walk over to a CREDIT CARD IMPRINTER. You know, the old machines they stick your card into with a carbon slip, and slide the handle over, going “SHONK-SHONK?” Seriously, she used one. I don’t think I’ve seen one of those since well before I was old enough to have a credit card. I thought they only had them in museums for failed technology. But I have physical evidence, a carbon-copy sales slip, which she then ran through the scanner hooked to her computer.

Honestly? Take that 700 billion dollar bailout and buy yourselves a credit card machine. You can get them on Ebay pretty cheap, I hear.

Then, of course, I get to take my fancy carbon slip back to the account closing lady.

Digression: Have you ever been to a renaissance festival? They’re a lot of fun: people dress in armor and medieval clothing and pretend to be lords and ladies and knights and so forth. You can buy period clothing, big turkey legs to gnaw on, swords and axes, etc. from vendors scattered throughout.

Why do I bring this up? THIS FAT HAIRY MAN IN CHAINMAIL, WHOSE STOREFRONT IS EFFECTIVELY A FEW PLANKS ON A MUDDY PATCH IN THE MIDDLE OF A FIELD, CAN ACCEPT ANY DEBIT AND/OR CREDIT CARD IN MY WALLET. PERHAPS BANK OF AMERICA SHOULD CONTACT THIS MAN TO LEARN THE SECRETS OF HIS TECHNOLOGICAL MARVEL.

So maybe my account is closed, maybe not. I’d give even odds that something else was “down” and I’ll need to come back in for something. Because I can clean every last dollar and dime from my account over the internet, but actually closing the thing is serious enough to require my physical presence on bank premises.

Bad bank. Bad naughty. Bad.

UPDATE: While I understand that a good rant can be a lot of fun, I’d respectfully ask that you keep comments relatively clean– if it’s not something you’d say to your boss, or your mother, or shout at random passersby on a street corner, please don’t put it in a comment. Thanks!

This is the worst bank on the planet!!! I want to close my account with them also. Everytime I call that bank, I get 5-7 different transfers, no one can help you and one time they actually transferred me to a totally different business…outside of Bank of America!! I think they try to rob you, confuse you, and frustrate you. Legal robbery and in tough times for everyone, they are pulling out all of the stops to get as much of your money as possible!!

Hi

I’m not sure you know this or not …you may have already discussed it… I just left a local branch of Bank of America and I wanted to cash a check drawn on their bank.

Here’s the course of events: 1) I gave her my Lic 2) The checking account had sufficient funds 3) She told me she had to CHARGE me $6.00 to cash the check for Security purposes. 4) I said your kidding she said it was for security.. 5) She then said…now you have to sit down for this….She had to get my fingerprint on the check 6) She then said would I like to open an account at the bank. 7) I said YOUR KIDDING ME…that must be a hard sell :)..you just charged me $6.00, took my fingerprint and now you want me to open an account up? 8) I then asked for a receipt for the $6.00 they said they don’t do that.. 9) I said WHAT…you have to give me a receipt it’s now a business expense. 10) So here I am writing you with out $6.00, NO receipt and a dirty thumb ( I even asked for a moist towel to wipe my thumb of and they denied me that. I then asked If I could wash my hands in a rest room, she denied me that, Initially I asked I asked for a clean ink pad and she said they only have one…..

I then thought that that might be a Health Hazard…so I called the local Health Dept I also thought HOW COULD THEY RUN A BUSINESS WITHOUT GIVING RECEIPTS…I called the attorney General

I just went into Bank of America to make a deposit into my friend’s account and they couldn’t give me a receipt because the account wasn’t mine. I asked could I get a receipt saying that I at least made a deposit. They said due to fraud I can’t get a receipt with his account number on it. I was like I didn’t ask or need one with an account number on it…just some thing saying I made the deposit or gave them the money. The teller said it was agaisnt their policy to give that…I’m like it is agaisnt your policy to give a receipt to someone that has given you some money…WHAT!!!I eventual talked to the Branch manager and gave her the business she eventually gave me a receipt and said that they will notgive me a receipt next time. If I buy a pack of gum at 7-11 I get a receipt but not at a bank!!!! I had enough of B of A when they start holding cashier’s checks for 6 days…Yeah it’s M1 money (their banking terminology) why is there a hold on it it’s like cash! This doesn’t make since and goes to show how banks are always trying to beat you and capitalize on human error!

BOA just closed my account after 25 years because a check I deposited was returned overdrawing my account although I made sufficient deposits to cover it that day. They said it was the second check returned from the same vendor within a three month period and that the risk assessment dept decided to close my account and that I could wait two weeks to receive the return of the excess funds which were in my account. When I said but I have been a good customer for 25 years and have even had my mortgage with them, the supervisor apologized for the inconvenience. I told her my family is therefore closing their other accoutns with BOA - sorry for the inconvenience - and telling everyone about their absurd behavior. I also asked for the complaint department and was told they have none.

I just had a run-in with BOA. Used to be OK with it, but then they started their dirty underhanded tricks. They decided to lower my credit limit, despite the fact that I pay it every month on time and have never gone over. Well, they did it the day before I went on a trip, didn’t bother to tell me (because in the contract it says they can do it whenever and not tell me. jerks.) and I ended going over my new limit. I was livid. Called the people and after I got to the last guy who said no to increasing my limit back to where it was, I lost it. He had the NERVE to say things on my boyfriends credit report were risky. Hello? Has he seen the balance sheet for BOA? Has he heard about all of that toxic debt they have? Risky my butt. If I had been the one in charge of the bailout I would’ve either let all those banks fail (especially AIG cause I HATE them) or given them a ridiculous interest rate because of THEIR high risk assessment. But anyway, since they’ve decided to start this (and who knows how far they’ll take things, not to mention how much the fees are going to be) I’m in the process of getting rid of the account and I’m going to tell me story again and again until maybe finally they’ll pass some legislation that gives the consumer more protection from these greedy, shady banks.

To give you some quick background about myself I use to work for Bank of America for 10 years. But was fired for taking to many breaks, but was in the top 10 sellers out of 60 employees. But that goodness they got rid of me, I found something a whole lot better. But what BofA did to me a couple of months ago was uncalled for. Basically I had a credit card with balance of $14,000 and never missed a payment in 5 years. And my interest rate was at 3.99%, then all of a sudden the reduce my credit limit (originally $20k) and raised my interest rate to 19.99% I tried my best to argue with them, but it was a waste of time. When I spoke an executive I advised him that if he does not reduce my interest rate on my credit card, I will not make a payment on my credit card. He really didn’t give a crap, but that’s what I did. So after 4 months of not making payments I get a call from there recovery dept and they told me that if I pay half of the debt then they will inform the credit bureau that this would be considered a paid-charge off. As you know I have been in the banking business for over 10 years. I told Mike (recovery debt) no deal. I told him that I want a formal letter from Bank of America stating that this debt has been paid in full as agreed, showing no collection or charge offs. Mike said that he could not do this, I said fine, goodbye to your $6k dollars I could have paid BofA. And in about 1 month later I received a letter from BofA stating that they would proceed with my demands. So once I paid of the debt I then checked my credit, and it shows that I have been a perfect customer with no lates or collections on me. Revenge is best served cold. :D

FYI: BOFA stocks are making my portfolio very happy, lol kiss my high interest rate butt Bank of ASSAMERICA

Raising interest rates on customers who have never missed a payment and have been customers for many years is normal for BA these days. They have got to be the worst bank around. The only option is to pay them off or opt out.

Not good choices but the only one.

I tried to pay off my credit card account. I asked to pay the amount on my last statement rather than their ‘pay off’ (which was a difference in $25. of interest) I was transfered to a department that asked detailed financial questions and then, the over zealous B of A rep decreased my credit limit by $6500. I was told I had no late payments, etc. Then,I had a $70000. check from a major creditable business (that was written on a B of A account) that I was using to pay the $4000. credit card balance and then request a cashier’s check because I was moving my savings and checking after the credit card incident. If the check is written on a B of A account, they can determine if there are funds to cover the check - I have done this transacton before with other banks. One rep at the bank said that she worked there but would not bank there -

I became a BofA CC customer because they bought a company (Working Assets) I had been with since 98. They have systematically wiped their feet on me but I don’t take it personally because as long as I pay, they keep my limit at 15k. This that we are cataloging is called their “Business model” and we have been soaking in it for years. From Jack Welch to Bernie Madoff we are supposed to pay the empty suits and STFU. Fiduciary responsibility and due diligence are sticks they beat you over the head with and do not trouble themselves over. You’ll be proud to know that now they ride on a carpet of our tax money, they plan on changing exactly nothing about how they do business. We should use the internet to enforced selective, controlled runs on folks like Citi and BofA. That, they would understand.

I cannot even BEGIN to tell you the horrible horrible things that they have done today. I’ve been on the phone or email, or chat, or at one of their branches for SIX HOURS. Yes, that’s right.

My mom thinks they are run by the mafia.

Makes sense. They shake people down, have no sense of ethics, don’t care about their customers or their employees. Of course it’s the mob.

This was so therapeutic to find other people who have the same experience with Bank of A**.

I have been banking with BOA for about 10 years. I’ve heard of all the troubles other people have gone thru with them but never experienced their true thievery until now. They said my account was overdrawn and started piling up the fees, over $200. When I called and calmly asked for an explanation, how is it that the bank and I had the exact, to the penny, same balances and I had overdraft fees. They proceeded to go through every transaction, I told them I already knew what I had bought and it wasn’t necessary, they continued. I told them I want my money returned they told me no way it’s not a bank error. I guess this is how they’re making up the money they lost through all the shaky business deals and overpaid execs, stealing from decent hard working folks. As soon as I have my direct deposit going to a reputable bank, I will be closing this account. And in the mean time, I am going to blog and comment everywhere I can so no more unsuspecting hard working funded people get ripped off by this pirating bank.

SO, A $55 DOLLAR OVERDRAFT WITH A $35 DOLLAR FEE IS EQUAL TO 63.5% INTEREST. Which is beyond loan-sharking. BOA’s excuse for letting payments go through when there are insufficient funds in the account is that debit card payments made without using your pin are processed through Visa and not the bank. BOA is unwilling to work with people and I am extremely disappointed with them. They will not budge when it comes to overdraft fees and on top of it all they charge an extended overdraft fee when you have benn overdrawn more than 5 days.

OH and as for ” keep track of your spending, and you won’t be overdrawn” Screw that. I have an installment agreement with the IRS. I pay $100 a month and have been sending by mail until they started automatically deducting it from my account. Nobody sent me a letter letting me know the electronic draft agreement was approved. SO I sent a check in, they took it, and lo and behold, the same day IRS decides to deduct 100 bucks from my checking. OF COURSE I had about 5 other debit transactions I had made, all under $5.00. SO that sets the ball rolling. I over drafted by $112.00 and BOA charges me $240 in overdraft fees! Thanks BOA! I got screwed and didn’t even get to enjoy it!

well over the past year, i have had my account numbers stolen and used all around town. i have always had my card in posession and this didnt make any sense. then i would get my account frozen due to ‘fraud alerts’. good intentions, but annoying none the less. so i have changed acct numbers and debit cards 3 times in 1 year. the last time this happened it was ATM fraud. somehow someone skimmed my card with pin number. used it at an ATM in town. anyone can go to my account statements and see that i only use BofA ATMs. this ATM happened to be in a night club somewhere. i dont make habits of using those machines or other non BofA ATMs due to the charges. well the withdrawal sent my account into the negative and all the purchases i made (thinking i was in the positive) were now getting hit with OD fees.

so they reverse the charges pending investigations. i even file a report with them about the ATM fraud. they send me a letter stating that there was no fraud and they will be debiting my account the $245 in OD fees plus the amount of the transactions. this is BS…they can send me to chexsystems or whoever, but i have switched my bank and they can shove it.

I can’t agree more, this piece of crap bank won’t last in this econ crysis. I gonna close my account next Monday.

I only had a credit account with them for 7 month and they start cheating on their customers, charged me next month balance 29 days before due day(one which i never sumbitted) and with the paid balance amount it cost me a overdraft in other checking account.

When I called BOA rep, not only she didn’t admit their crime but go as far as to say I “submitted” the payment personally, what the heck? I just paid this month balance in FULL and only start spending for 2 days and then they charged me again for the 2 day’s spending(which is couple hundred dollars)

WHY WOULD I SUBMIT A PAYMENT AMOUNT I DON’T EVEN KNOW HOW MUCH 29 days before due day and without a bill statement? AND I SWEAR I NEVER DID.

Bank of America not only is a bad bank, but they are professional criminals doing bad deeds in open day light.

I put a cash offer on a foreclosure held by BAnk of Am. They waited two weeks to decide on buyer and they picked highest. The highest tried to renegotiate so the bank put it back on the market. I went back with a higher cash offer and it has been a week with no decision. These people are really rotten bad. I think I will pull my offer. Now that we are running out of time for the tax rebate for first time home buyers, what in the world is the matter with them. They will go under.

I just spent an hour with their cust. service people. I was overdrawn in the bus. acct. even though I have a credit line that is supposed to kick in automatically and I regularly pay the yearly fee to keep it active. I start the chat with the bank and explain the situation but he says after checking it, he doesn’t know why this happened but gives me a number to call. I call it and after all the prompts I’m told they cannot take the call and call back later. I tell the guy on chat what happened and he gives me a different no. I call that no. and after all the prompts and explanations, she tells me I need call a business line. I call them and explain what happened and the guy after much investigating tells me that my credit line should be fine but somehow it got closed. So, now they are investigating and someone should call me back. Absolutely the worst service I have ever encountered. What really irks me is that everyone is super friendly and will ask you a million times if there is anything else they can do for you, yet the service is so horrible. Thanks for the opportunity to vent

I went through something similar today - I am about to mail out a letter to BofA and basically what it comes down to is they can try charging me all the fees I want, but when I get a confirmation over the phone and send in faxes to back up my account closures, I’m not going to pay their ridiculous fees when all I want to do is see them gone forever!

I would like to close my BOA account but found out that a loan I have automaticaly debited from my account was sold to some other lender without any notification to me. I want to notify the new lender so I can set up the direct debit from a new account. BOA says they have no information on the new lender or on the other direct debit that comes out of my account each month. So I get about 700 dollars taken out of my account each month and BOA has no address, phone number or anything for these two automatic debits! That is insane! How can they let someone take money out of my account without any contact information? Dont get me started on BOAs new overdraft policy. They suck!

I never wanted to be a BofA customer. my bank was bought by a bank that was bought by a bank that was bought by BofA. I had Business, personal, savings, and two mortgages with them. In the last year I moved everything to a small local bank, and closed out except of one mortgage. This October I received a letter from BofA concerning the one mortgage still with them about a shortfall in the escrow attached to the mortgage. Property taxes and homeowners insurance being the cause for the shortfall. OK after talking to the local taxman and my insurance company I managed to get the whole thing sorted. This week (the week before X-mass) I get a new payment coupon book for the mortgage. The payment was 500 dollars or 20% more than it had been. I promptly called the customer service dept (new phone #, new address?) and after waiting out all the prompts finally got a rep on the phone. After 45 minutes he came back to tell me they had made a mistake and the old payment was correct… OK yesterday I go to a BofA drive-up window to make the mortgage payment, I hand the woman the coupon and the cash and she says the system will not allow her to make the payment because the system said the amount was wrong and my coupon was wrong. I told her I had been on the phone with the loan dept and a mistake had been made somewhere in the system that the phone rep had corrected. She said there was nothing she could do for me unless I handed over an additional 500 bucks. At that point I said fine, Give me back my money and could she please give me a letter so I would not be charged a late fee since the system would not except the payment. No, she was not allowed to do that. Now it was time to park the car and go inside to talk to the branch manager. After explaining the situation for the third time she spent the next 30 minutes on the phone and finally accepted the payment and gave me a receipt along with an apology. I could go on with some pretty incredible stories about the banks policies but why bother, I think anyone reading this knows the deal. Down with BofA… I would not shed a tear of they went under tomorrow. How many people will just take the banks word for it and just pay it? Good luck getting that money back…

I just got charged $35 and $35 in overdraft fees and $10 in overdraft transfer fee from savings and the $4.00 I HAD in savings that they STOLE for a grand total of an $84.00 service fee on $7.00 worth of overdraft!

I hate B of A and I would mind if burned in hell forever for this kind of theft.

My old bank never charged me for overdrafts under $10.00 and when I brought in the money to cover the overdraft they always backed off the overdraft charges.

I other words B of A compared to my old bank are just Bank Robbers!!!

Any not understanding that these posts are serious and they should stay away from any bank with more than 5 branches, has a hard lesson to learn.

Not only are they the worse bank in the world for regular checking and savings accounts. They are the worse bank in the world for home loans, car loans and any other loans!!! They have the absolute worse customer service people I have ever dealt with. Every single time you speak to them they sound like they are on a pedestal because they are on the other line. They speak so negatively to anyone and they don’t care about anything that is going on. Even if you’re on time with your payments and are only calling with a question they speak to you like you are a nonentity. I am very surprised that the banking commission hasn’t put a stop to some of their ways. I know 15 people myself who has wrote letters to the banking commission about this company and nothing is being done. I guess it actually doesn’t surprise me! Unfortunately they bought out my home loan and I have never been so unhappy with any bank before.
